this is fox 5 news at 10:00. tonight a community comes together to mourn a murdered teen-ager as police try to calm fears and answer questions about the case. >> plus more chaos in the mideast, angry crowds rioting over an anti-muslim film and we're learning more about the

attack that killed a u.s. ambassador and three other americans. is that now there are cameras set up to -- >> now there are cameras set up to keep tabs on speed cameras in prince george's county, 10 guesses why. we'll begin with the mist of a murder surrounding a -- mystery of a murder surrounding a prince george's county student. good evening. i'm brian bolter. >> and i'm shawn yancy. someone gunned down marckel ross. so far there are no suspects or motives. fox 5's audrey barnes is back from the school with the latest. >> about a half dozen prince george's county police detectives and officials gathered in the auditorium to answer questions about the case. they also announced a $25,000 reward for information that helps them catch the killer. >> we have the police department working around the case. >> detectives don't have a lot to go on. they don't know if marckel ross was targeted and they're throwing of available resource at the case to find out.

>> it's going to be that smallest tip that's going to close that case. it's going to be i saw a vehicle, i saw a person, a small description. i know that he was arguing with this guy. whatever the information is, we need that information to be brought forward because we're going to investigate all of it. >> a parent with the fashion club that ross loved so much says he was bullied l.a. year, but she thought it was -- last year, but she thought it was over. many wonder tonight if perhaps it wasn't. >> we talked to security about it and other than that i didn't hear anything else about him being bullied. so i asked in the hallway several times, marckel, anybody messing with you? no. i'm okay. >> pros is the 2nd prince george's county student to i do a horrific death in the last -- to die a horrific death in the last month. amber stanley was shot in her bed. detectives have found no connection. >> there is absolutely no established link to the young lady that was killed in kettering. >> police promise stepped up patrols both before and after school to help students feel

safe. the back to school night crowd broke up early to hold a vigil in ross' honor. the least likely person many here thought would die so tragically. >> marckel, he was a good kid. everybody loved him and he just brightened everybody's day like you're having a bad day, he'll cheer you up. >> a big part of us was gone because he was basically we think of the class, he was part of the class, so he was part of our picture. now it's not complete. >> the school's principal has challenged marckel's classmates to in his words let his tragic death be the fuel for achievement this school year. his friends say they'll try for him. still no arrest in the shooting at morgan state university. police want to talk with the victim and hope he can provide them with some clues. a gunman walked onto campus yesterday and shot a young man in the stomach inside the student center. investigators don't believe the victim nor gunman are students but do believe the two men knew

each other. new developments in the deadly consulate attack in libya. several men are under arrest in connection with the attack on the u.s. embassy in benghazi and the u.s. government is trying to distance itself from a controversial anti-islam film that started it all. fox 5's will thomas is here now. >> right now we don't know if these are prime suspects in custody or people who may have some sort of knowledge about who is behind the consulate attack, an attack described by one u.s. intel official as a coordinated military style operation. the violence continues in nearly a dozen separate locations all across the middle east. these are anti-american protests in response to a film in los where it was made that mocks the islam prophet muhammad. >> there is no justification, none at all, for responding to this video with violence. >> so far it seems no one is listening to secretary clinton.

in yemen protesters are trying to destroy the u.s. embassy. cars were torched, windows broken. this time the embassy was prepared, vac waiting everyone in advance -- evacuating everyone in advance, all of this response to the release of the video called innocence of muslims depicting the prophet muhammad as a fraud and madman. secretary clinton is trying to distance the u.s. government from this controversial film. >> it appears to have a deeply cynical purpose, to denigrate a great religion and to provoke rage. >> reporter: the rage is evident in cairo. once again a u.s. embassy targeted by protesters. more than 200 people were overcome by tear gas as egyptian security forces pushed back the angry mob. in response president obama ordered increased security at all u.s. missions around the world including sending marriages to libya after the

deadly -- marines to libya after the deadly attack on the u.s. consulate in benghazi. militants used guns and rocket propelled grenades to set fire to the consulate. four americans were killed including the u.s. ambassador to libya chris stevens and two former navy seals working private security trying to protect the bams dow. glenn doherty seen in these -- ambassador, glenn doherty seen in these photos and tyrone woods, the second navy seal. a fourth american killed shaun smith, was an air force veteran who worked as an information management specialist for the state department. at a campaign event thursday president obama said the militants involved in the consulate attack will be brought to justice. >> to all those who would do us harm, no act of terror will go unpunished. it will not dim the light of the values that we proudly present to the rest of the world. >> ironically in at least half

the locations in the middle east where anti-american protests have broken out the united states has actually helped push democracy including libya. as for that controversial film made in los angeles, reports are now surfacing the actors were told it was an arabian desert adventure and some of the most controversial lines mocking the prophet muhammad were later dubbed in. learning more about the u.s. ambassador to libya who died in tuesday's attack in the consulate, a doctor who treated him said chris stevens died from asphyxiation from smoke in halls. stevens was reportedly killed -- inhalation. stevens was reportedly killed while trying to save members of his staff. tonight those who knew him are speaking out. >> my understanding is the reason he was killed is that he went back in to go save his people, his employees. >> three other americans were also killed in the attack. a baltimore county judge postponed a bail hearing for a teenager charged with shooting a fellow student the first day

of class. the attorney for 15-year-old robert gladden jr. requested the delay saying the teen had been on suicide watch while being treated at a psychiatric hospital. during a news conference today gland's attorney said prior to the shooting the -- gladden's attorney said prior to the shooting the teen wrote a text saying it would be the last day of his life. >> acting out in a terrible fashion in the hopes that somebody other than him would pull the trigger on him and he would perish. i think he expected and desired to be killed. as sad as that is, i think that's the reality of this case. >> the judge granted the delay pending a mental health assessment. gladden is accused of opening fire in the cafeteria at harry hall high school. one of the bullets hit student daniel borowy in the back. borowy is expected to be okay. tomorrow back in the hot seat for pepco. the maryland public service commission began the hearing today quizzing the utilities on

whether they were prepared with adequate staffing. pepco's representative had this response. >> our performance was comparable to other utilities around us. we reached out, brought in mutual assistance, used our own resources, was immediately an all hands event for us. >> the public service commissioners say one question they're asking all utilities is whether it's reasonable to expect electricity to be restored in 24 hours after major event. the derecho storm took down trees and power lines in 11 state and d.c., left nearly 4 million customers in the dark. let's go outside right now. it's been an absolutely gorgeous week weatherwise, still nice out there tonight. here's a live look. what can we expect the rest of this workweek? sue palka is in the weather center with the details. >> it looks like we'll finish up on another high note, although tomorrow a frontal boundary is going to approach. it will increase the clouds in the afternoon. we might get a couple sprinkles

but mostly after the sun goes down tomorrow. this is the high temperature today 81 degrees, absolutely average for this time of year and yes, it has been a spectacular week. what we are seeing behind the front that is going to come in our direction is a pretty significant temperature drop. let me show you where that front is now. you can see it's gone through chicago. their high was 71. st. louis it was 88 degrees. so a pretty good drop behind that front. it will drop our temperatures for the weekend back into the 70s, but we're thinking this front which does have some moisture with it is mostly going to come flue on the dry side. you can see it's -- through on the dry side. you can see it's collecting moisture on the edge of it from chicago west of st. louis. we'll see a few high clouds coming in here, but for the balance of this overnight it looks like we'll be talking about mostly clear skies. so a spotty shower or some sprinkles late friday. we'll talk more about the within and next week which is a completely different weather pattern which i join you upstairs. coming up a major break-

fairfax county police are looking for thieves stealing thousands of dollars from people living at a inova cardiac care center. someone installed this skig in detectives believe that skimmer has been in place since late august. there are four victims known but it's believed there are more out there. more speed cameras popping up across the region. it's no secret they aren't popular, but prince george's county police say recently vandals have been targeting the

equipment. their solution? more cameras for the crams. fox 5's bob barnard has this -- cameras. fox 5's bob barnard has this story. >> reporter: that's a speed cram, one of 60 just like it in -- camera, one of 60 just like it in prince george's county and yes, they aren't the most popular things in the world. >> the way the economy is, people are struggling and this is what we get. it's just ridiculous. >> reporter: the one this one just replaced here lingeries track road in bowie was -- here along racetrack road in bowie was destroyed by a vandal. >> i'm glad they did it. >> reporter: in recent months police say six of the county's portable speed cameras have been vandalized. >> that includes everything from spray painting to be shot at. >> reporter: that's why this police officer says they've taken the unprecedented step of

placing a security camera on top of the new speed camera on racetrack road. >> that photographs at the base of the camera to no. 1, record any activity of someone that may try to tamper with the camera and no. 2, to try to dissuade someone from maybe doing that kind of thing. >> reporter: what do you think about that? >> i guess it's a good idea if people are vandalizing them. >> reporter: the speed cameras cost up to $100,000 apiece. >> looking at it from a taxpayer standpoint the more that they tear up, the more taxes come out of my pocket. >> reporter: this is the first, but prince george's county police are promising it won't be the last of these cameras watching their speed cameras hoping to have a dozen more up and rolling by the end of the year. major liberati says the speed cameras are positioned for a reason, this one on wind brook drive in clinton put here after two pedestrians were killed on this road this summer. >> our goal is to brick down

the level of accidents -- bring down the level of accidents and fatalities. >> reporter: if someone is going to mess with one of your cameras? >> they're going to get locked up. >> reporter: in bowie, maryland, bob barnard, fox 5 news. drivers are getting a break in montgomery county. there are no longer late fees on speed or red late camera tickets after a major judge advised county leaders charging the fees violated state law. montgomery county has 56 fixed speed cameras, 20 portable one, six speed camera vans. a major break-through for metro, the transit agency now has a monitoring system to detect problems on the rails in realtime. the system was created in response to the red line train crash three years ago that killed nine people. that crash was blamed on a failure in a train control system that went undetected. fox 5's sherri ly has the story. >> reporter: in the months after the june, 2009 red line train crash federal investigators uncovered a series of problems with metro's

track circuits and automatic train control system or atc. following the crash the national transportation safety board made developing a realtime monitoring system an urgent recommendation. now metro has one. >> there's a problem in the atc system in terms of where the trains are located. it alerts us right away. >> reporter: this animation shows what happened in the 2009 crash. notice as the front train enters the faulty track circuit, the computer system fails to detect it and automatically accelerates the next train as if there is no other train on the track causing the collision. having a realtime monitoring system in place now could prevent another deadly accident. . >> it really watches this system to see that a train that is moving along suddenly doesn't disappear from the system. >> reporter: prior to this no such realtime monitoring system

existed, not at metro or anywhere in the country. >> that technology makes you feel like those kind of accidents won't occur in the future. >> to see them i'm 100% sure that it's going to work as it's supposed to. i'm a little bit skeptical. >> reporter: the system is a major step toward returning the rail system to automatic train control. trains have been operating in manual mode since the crash which required slower speeds and riders complained of jerking rides. >> doing entirely manual control sounds rather obsolete. >> reporter: metro won't say when it will return to automatic mode. >> certainly this is a step forward in that direction. >> reporter: it still has other ntsb recommendations to complete, but they have now cleared a major hurdle. metro first developed a prototype for this realtime monitoring system in october, 2009, shortly after the red line train crash. it took a year and a half of

the race for the white house in battle ground virginia tonight, republican presidential candidate mitt romney held a rally in fairfax. they had a few setbacks. romney canceled the moment of silence for the slain u.s. ambassador to libya and three other diplomats after he was heckled. fox 5's tom fitzgerald has the story. >> reporter: republican presidential candidate mitt romney's bus was met by cheering supporters at a park in the city of fairfax, but the event quickly faced a detour.

>> northern virginia could well determine who the next president is and i hope you make that decision to get me elected. [ cheering and applause ] >> reporter: romney said he would start the rally with a moment of silence for u.s. ambassador chris stevens and three others killed in libya but did not after being heckled. >> the tragedy to lose such a wonderful -- wonderful people that have been so wonderful and appreciate their service for the country. >> reporter: a man in the crowd yelled at the governor accusing him of politicizing the libyan killings and demanding that romney apologize. the man was shouted down by the crowd and quickly removed. >> i would offer a moment of silence, but one gentleman doesn't want to be silenced, so we're going to keep on going. >> reporter: from there romney turned to the economy which he says is not turning around fast enough and the current president who he says needs to be turned out of office. >> how in the world can he go before a democrat convention and speak to the nation and off

nothing but more of the same is beyond me. >> reporter: romney supporters say they liked what they heard. >> it reenforced what he wanted to hear. >> i was looking for specifics and i got some. >> reporter: but democratic party chairman brian moran says he is confident president obama will carry virginia like he did in 2008. >> we're well organized. i think the republicans are trying to catch up. we're well ahead and i think that organization ultimately will prevail. >> reporter: with only 54 days left real clear politics has virginia in a dead heat. both campaigns are expected to make morva 7 appearances before it is -- more virginia appearances before it is all over. the romney campaign long ago identified virginia as one of its key battlegrounds and they will keep up the pressure on friday when vice presidential republican candidate paul ryan campaigns in harrisonburg, virginia. first lady michelle obama in virginia today in downtown

richmond. she also speak to supporters at university of mary washington in fredericksburg. president obama is going for another win in the state. four years ago he became the first democratic presidential candidate to carry the state in 44 years. the president meantime campaigned in colorado today marking his ninth trip to that battleground state this year. colorado is considered a must win state with nine electoral votes. president obama spoke at a grassroots event telling supporters it's the education in america that makes dreams come true. >> let's face it. a mixed kid from hawaii born to a single mom is not likely to become president of the united states. but in america it can happen because of education. because somebody gave me opportunity. >> a new poll shows the president is gaining support in colorado. the first poll since the democratic national convention gives the president a five- point lead. up next the big apple officially bans sugary drinks,

a this is fox 5 news at 10:00. it's official. new york has become the first city in the nation to ban sugary super size soft drinks. there is a limit on cups of calorie packed beverages. we have the details. >> all in fave of approving the proposal -- favor of approving the proposal? opposed? >> reporter: if you live in new york and like to super size your soft drinks, you might want to start filling up now. health officials banning all sugary drinks bigger than 16

ounces from places like restaurants, delis, movie theaters and sports facilities. the mayor says the ban is just one step toward helping people make healthier decisions. >> sugary drink consumption is a key driver of the obesity epidemic in our city and across the united states and reducing the amount of sugary drinks that we consume is the simplest diet change we can make to help lose weight. >> reporter: some call the ban a historic life saving measure. >> i want to congratulate the board on what i consider to be a historic step to address major health problem of our time. >> reporter: but others say the law is intrusive and an industry group claims they've gathered more than 250,000 signatures against the ban. >> there's no indication that banning these beverages in certain establishments across the city will do anything, but there's a lot of indication that it will cause a lot of problems both for individuals who want the choice to drink them and for the businesses that will be hurt by this ban.

>> reporter: the group is considering a lawsuit and other legal options to halt the ban, but until then the law is scheduled to go into effect in march of next year. one person on the city's board of health did abstain from voting this morning saying he is still skeptical. the other eight board members all voted to approve the ban. in new york julie banberis fox news. >> we asked our facebook fans to write in. carey wrote maybe this will make someone consider the health risks of that supersized soda and sebrina wrote this is america. if the public has high demand for big sugary drinks, they should be allowed to spend their money on the drinks. we've all heard one person's junk is another person's treasure. fox 5's beth parker has the story. >> reporter: a great story that begins at a flea market in west virginia where a woman

bought a cardboard box of stuff. was it $7 for the whole box? >> yes, ma'am. >> reporter: this woman who asked not to be identified sort of liked the frame on a painting at the bottom of the box underneath a doll. for two years the painting drifted around. >> it was in my shed, the trunk of my car, in the spare bedroom. >> reporter: after a while. >> i had some free time one day on my hands and figured i would try to take the painting out of its frame. >> reporter: it was stuck, so her mom suggested she get someone to look at it before tearing it apart. in july she brought it here to the potomack company auction house in old town, alexandria. when the woman showed up at the potomack company, she was carrying the painting in a white plastic garbage bag with a drawstring around the top like you'd use in your kitchen. >> she opens up the bag and this little jewel comes out. >> reporter: anne craner is director of fine arts at

a final good-bye for an american hero. hundreds gathered at washington national cathedral to remember the first astronaut to walk on the moon. neil appear strong died last month at the -- armstrong died last month at the age of 82. fox 5's john henrehan attended the memorial service. >> reporter: in 1969 when neil armstrong became the first human to step foot on the moon. neil saduk watched it on television and told us through his son he was very proud for all humanity. >> i was very proud to see the first person ever on the moon. >> reporter: he and his wife came from bangladesh to join about 2,000 ear people at the memorial service -- other people at the memorial service for neil armstrong. among the others who showed, roger meyers who brought an autographed poster of buzz aldrin standing on the lunar

surface, neil armstrong reflected in the visor took the picture. the navy's sea chanters sang an anthem from the service's hymnal. neil armstrong was 38 years old we had made history on the moon. john snow spoke at the service. >> he was always in his heart of hearts that little boy who whittled wooden model airplanes on that small farm in central ohio. he built his own wind tunnel by age 12. >> reporter: a fellow astronaut reminded those how neil armstrong explained put ago poll low down on the moon with if i -- putting apollo down on the moon with 15th 2nd of fuel left. >> he put his hang on there and he'd say well -- hand on there and he'd say well, when the

looking day, maybe not quite as sunny as today especially by afternoon. that's a great high definition picture of the capitol with all the lights sparkling around it. temperatures today, we got up to 81 degrees, our average high, nice low humidity, dulles and bwi also in the low 80s. we'll be a little warmer tomorrow. what we are noticing tonight is each night we've added a few degrees of it's 71 degrees in the district now. for sure there are some people in the 50s and low 60s, but tonight will not be as chilly as other nights this week. we'll mostly have some 50s in the suburbs and lower 60s. 63 for the district, one of the cooler spots out here toward the martinsburg area at 54 degrees, quantico 62, annapolis 65 and baltimore 61 and yes, still clear skies, but notice out through west virginia we begin to see a few high thin clouds coming in, no rain with those and we're still on the clear side, but those high thin

clouds will come in during the morning. this is what we're watching tomorrow night, probably pretty late now, 9:00, 10:00, 11:00, this frontal boundary will try to cross the district. it's got some showers with it, a pretty skinny band, more substantial moisture over texas where they've been so drought stricken. this is a good heavy amount of moisture. this part will move along the gulf coast giving them a bit more rain. at the surface high pressure will try to hang in there one more day, the last little edge of the ridge hanging in for the metro area giving us a nice day, but the front will barge through. there will only be spotty showers with the front, maybe some sprinkles. that moves through in the overnight hours and we're back to good stuff saturday. this time saturday the high will be off to our west, so we get the north breeze and a mix of sun and clouds, but a really nice day, the kind of day that will get you inspired to get out and do those projects outside, don't have to rake the leaves yet, but maybe do some
